Bellmount Developments have been granted planning permission for a purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) scheme in Cork City, Ireland.
The plans were submitted by Bellmount Developments Limited in August 2022, but was held up due to a backlog of applications.
Now, the current vacant car dealership can now be demolished and replaced with a seven-storey PBSA block comprising 78 student homes in a mix of single-bedroom studio apartments to eight-bedroom apartments.
In total, there will be 206 beds in the development. Amenities include common study areas, a gym, bicycle storage, cinema room, rooftop terrace and 24/7 reception.
No car parking spaces were proposed to be provided with the development, however students attending Munster Technological University (MTU) can access the campus via bus stops near the site.
The site was chosen by Bellmount Developments due to its convenient location and proximity to the main campus of University College Cork (UCC).
The board considered that the proposed development would be compliant with the provisions of the Cork City Development Plan 2022-2028.
“Student specific accommodation frees up houses in housing estates which can be lived in by families, both young and old which brings life back into the estates around the area and takes the students out of residential areas.
“My only hope is that the rents in this new development are reasonable enough, allowing the students and their families some level of affordability.”
Terry Coleman, Councillor in the city’s South West ward, Fianna Fáil
