Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) are set to develop the first purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) scheme in the Tardeo area of Mumbai.

MHADA state that the development will offer compact ‘upmarket living’ studio apartments. Once this project is completed and gains traction, plans are being prepared to encourage private developers to enter the market, with incentives such as an extra floor space index (FSI) and reduced premiums.

“Unfortunately, there are hardly any hostels or student accommodation facilities to cater to [students].

“This is the need of the hour. To begin with, we have shortlisted the Tardeo building, which is to be approved by the cabinet.

“The state government is on the lookout for agencies, especially universities and colleges, that can run and manage these facilities on a rental basis.”

In cities such as Mumbai, Pune and Nashik, there is a significant demand for student accommodation, due to the large number of students coming from outside the cities to study.
