The University of Glasgow plans to replace a parking area with PBSA residences have gone on display from last week. The project aims to redevelop the existing area at Lilybank Gardens into a sympathetic, inclusive, student-centred hub, featuring modern accommodation and accessible public spaces.

The development is part of a strategy to bring more students on campus to boost the vitality of the university core rather than relying on satellite accommodation.

The new proposal aims to address the shortage of appropriate student housing close to campus, while ensuring that the West End of Glasgow in Scotland remains a vibrant community even after lectures end.

“This development will not only support local businesses but also enhance safety by realising the 24/7 campus vision. Providing the right accommodation, in the right location, combined with more on-campus earning opportunities, will enable a better balance between learning, earning, and enjoying student life, while enhancing integration with the wider West End environment and community.

“The current design principles aim to pay homage to the historic homes that once stood on the site, reimagining the area and linking it with the surrounding tenements, townhouses and active lane culture.

“The development will restore key frontages to Lilybank Gardens and Great George Lane, transforming the car park into a lively and integrated space for the University and wider community.

“The buildings will include active ground-floor spaces that complement pedestrian pathways, creating a transition between Ashton Lane and Cresswell Lane. This design will balance green spaces with the distinctive character of West End architecture.”

Statement, University of Glasgow

The plot is currently owned by the University of Glasgow, but it is used as a car park and managed by Glasgow City Council via a lease agreement.

Historically, the site would have been populated by tenements and townhouses, with the parking area resulting from their demolition in the past.
