Urban Centric’s plans for The Wharf – a PBSA scheme in Butetown, Cardiff, are set to be given the go-ahead. The site concerns an undeveloped plot of around 0.3 acres in size, located between Schooner Way and Bute East Dock.
Urban Centric purchased the site at The Wharf from Cadwyn Housing Association in 2023 which has now been earmarked for a 158-bedroom PBSA development. The site enjoys stunning, uninterrupted water views over the Bute East Dock and is equidistant from the city centre and Cardiff Bay.
The Wharf proposals include the construction of a building rising from three storeys up to ten storeys. The development reads as two separate buildings joined by a walled private plaza area. The lower three storey element is located to the north of the site, rising to ten storeys at the south.
The mixed-use scheme includes commercial space on the upper ground floor level and living accommodation for students with associated accommodation and works. Amenities would include a cinema room, study space, games room, gym, private dining room, lounges, yoga studio, cycle store, two car parking spaces and a private courtyard garden area.
The proposal from the council is for Urban Centric to contribute £75,367 towards new community facilities, or upgrading existing facilities, and £85,351 towards a new open space or upgrade to an existing open space.
Planning for The Wharf is recommended to grant permission, subject to a section 106 and conditions. Cardiff Council’s planning committee will discuss the application on Thursday 5 June.
