Cavendish & Gloucester (C&G), a property developer known for high-quality, bespoke projects, has secured planning permission for a landmark opportunity to transform a prominent brownfield site near Southampton Central Station into one of the city’s most iconic developments.
The 20-storey scheme, dubbed The Periscope, will deliver purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) for approximately 170 students, helping to address the city’s acute shortage of dedicated student beds while also freeing up homes in the private rented sector for local families.
Strategically positioned just a short walk from the central station, The Periscope will rise proudly alongside other tall buildings already approved or constructed in the city centre. With its striking architecture, thoughtful internal design including features to support neurodiverse students, and prime location, the development is set to become a symbol of modern student living in Southampton.
“This is more than a building – it’s a landmark in every sense. We worked closely with senior officers at Southampton City Council to bring The Periscope forward, and I’d like to pay testament to that partnership, which reflects the Council’s proactive approach to growth and regeneration. From the outset, this has been a collaborative effort aligned with Southampton’s city centre evolution.
“Across the UK, cities have embraced nicknames for distinctive buildings – from the Gherkin to the Walkie-Talkie. The Periscope will become Southampton’s own architectural shorthand – a recognisable, respected part of its skyline and story.
“This landmark project reflects everything we stand for at Cavendish & Gloucester: Ambition, Persistence, Intelligent investment and a commitment to creating high-quality, design-led spaces that serve both residents and the wider community.“We’re proud to contribute to the ongoing transformation of Southampton and to help meet the growing demand for well-managed, thoughtfully designed student living. A huge thank you to our consultant team for their invaluable support in bringing this forward.“
